Class Central is one of the world's leading course discovery platforms, connecting learners to thousands of online courses from top universities and institutions globally. We focused on transforming their content-rich but directionless experience into a guided learner journey, making it easier for users to enter with intent, explore with clarity, and continue with momentum.
01
Users arrived with a learning goal in mind, but the onboarding flow pushed everyone into broad topic selection immediately, creating overwhelm and disconnected personalization.
02
Competing sections, low hierarchy, inconsistent banners made the homepage feel content-heavy rather than discovery-driven. This turned exploration into a cognitive task.
03
Once past onboarding, there were no meaningful signals that the platform remembered the user’s journey that made the experience feel passive and fragmented over time.
To transform a content-rich discovery platform into a guided learner experience where every touchpoint felt intentional, connected, and built around the user’s journey while keeping class central’s identity intact. The focus was to reduce cognitive effort at every stage and replace passive browsing with a sense of purpose and momentum.
We combined UX audits, user interviews, behavioral analysis, and competitor benchmarking to map where the experience was losing momentum. The focus was on understanding learner intent, identifying gaps in the journey, and building a research foundation strong enough to inform every design decision that followed.

We shifted onboarding from broad topic selection to a goal-first flow. By breaking the experience into smaller, focused steps starting with why the user wants to learn. We reduced entry overwhelm and made personalization feel meaningful from the start. Subject discovery followed intent, not the other way around.
We made the experience feel connected beyond onboarding. Through an improved profile completion flow, progression cues, and “continue where you left off” patterns, users could feel the platform actively supporting their journey not just storing it.
We worked within Class Central’s existing design language and built a comprehensive design system around it. The focus was on bringing more consistency, clearer hierarchy, and guided UI patterns that aligned with what was already there, making the experience feel cohesive and intentional without losing brand familiarity.
By shifting to intent-based onboarding, we predict a meaningful reduction in early drop-off, with research suggesting activation rates can improve by 30 to 50%. This gives learners a clearer path forward from the moment they sign up, increasing the likelihood of converting first-time visitors into active users.
Restructuring homepage hierarchy and improving visual guidance is expected to reduce cognitive overload during exploration, helping learners find relevant courses faster. Better UX hierarchy alone has shown to reduce bounce rates by 10 to 15%, directly improving time spent engaging with content.
Every design decision was made to improve the learner journey while protecting Class Central’s organic search equity, meaning better user experience and up to 3x improvement in conversion potential, without disrupting the discoverability that drives millions of visits.
